Nomvalo’s Decision to Fire Duduzile is a Brilliant but Short Sighted Move

MK Party Secretary-General Sibonelo Nomvalo recently made a major power move. He fired Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla and Nhlamulo Ndhlela. This decisive action serves two conflicting tactical purposes. It is a brilliant short-term play but a fatal long-term gamble.

Tactically, the axings were necessary. The move helps break the public perception that MK is just a Zuma family enterprise. By removing the former president’s daughter, Nomvalo showed the party has formal institutional structures. It also crushed a parallel power base. Duduzile and Ndhlela often bypassed leadership to dictate party narratives. Nomvalo asserted his administrative authority before they could oust him. Jacob Zuma likely gave implicit clearance, using Nomvalo to clean house.

However, this victory will definitely backfire on Nomvalo. The MK Party has an absolute purge cycle. The secretary-general position is a revolving door, having seen multiple changes in a short time. Zuma often uses his administrators to execute messy purges, only to discard them later to reset the party image.

Furthermore, Duduzile remains a powerful gatekeeper with immense influence over her father. Her faction is already working to sabotage the secretary-general. Ultimately, the party constitution gives Jacob Zuma absolute decree power. The moment Nomvalo’s growing control threatens that authority, or family pressure increases, Zuma will use his powers to sideline him. Nomvalo won the immediate battle, but history suggests he has accelerated his own political exit.
