IDAC's Andrea Johnson Attempts to Evade Accountability with Resignation Offer

The head of South Africa's Investigating Directorate Against Corruption, Andrea Johnson, is facing intense scrutiny over her sudden absence from the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

Johnson was scheduled to testify before the commission on July 13, 2026, to answer serious allegations of collusion and defeating the ends of justice. However, her legal team announced she had been rushed to the hospital with an undisclosed illness just before the proceedings began. They submitted a medical certificate booking her off for three days.

Commission chairperson Mbuyiseli Madlanga criticized the medical certificate, describing it as useless because it contained no meaningful information about her condition. The postponement of her highly anticipated testimony has drawn the attention of President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is now scrutinizing her conduct.

The allegations against Johnson stem from explosive testimony given by a whistleblower. The commission heard that Johnson allegedly leaked confidential details of a criminal complaint to Crime Intelligence deputy head Feroz Khan in 2018 while she was a senior prosecutor. Khan himself is in the hospital after being shot the night before he was scheduled to appear before the commission.

The presidency indicated that Ramaphosa was looking forward to Johnson's testimony. Her failure to appear has intensified questions about her fitness to lead the country's primary anti-corruption unit.
