Member of Parliament David Skosana suspended following ethics committee findings

uMkhonto weSizwe Party Member of Parliament David Mandla Skosana has officially begun serving a suspension from South African parliamentary activities following recommendations by the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members Interests. The suspension period spans from 3 August to 21 August 2026 during which he is barred from taking part in all debates and committee proceedings.

The sanctions stem from two separate complaints investigated by the ethics committee. The most severe incident involved the verbal intimidation of a female journalist from Newzroom Afrika within the parliamentary precinct. The committee determined that Skosana aggressively confronted the reporter after she conducted an interview with another member of parliament instead of representatives from his party. Skosana shouted at the journalist and implied threats regarding her job security by claiming he had influence with her employers.

In addition to his suspension from parliamentary business, Skosana faces financial consequences. His salary and allowances have been docked for the full duration of the fifteen day period, and he was ordered to receive a formal reprimand in the National Assembly.

The ethics committee also investigated Skosana for failing to properly declare his financial and business interests. Skosana omitted his directorship in UVO Communications from the public portion of the Register of Members Interests. The company had previously been identified in findings by the Auditor General as a state service provider, representing a conflict of interest that required full disclosure under parliamentary ethics rules. For this violation, Skosana received an additional reprimand and was ordered to pay a fine of 15000 rand.

The decision to penalize Skosana reflects ongoing efforts by Parliament to enforce ethical standards, protect journalists working within public institutions, and maintain transparency around the financial dealings of elected officials.
