Operation Ubuntu and Its Mission to Counter Xenophobia

Operation Ubuntu emerged as a collective civil society movement in South Africa, established in response to a surge in anti-migrant demonstrations and informal vigilantism. Bringing together more than sixty social justice organizations, human rights movements, and community advocacy groups under the unifying banner of Africa Stands Together, the coalition was formed to advocate for the protection of foreign nationals and promote Pan-African solidarity.

The core mission of Operation Ubuntu is grounded in the principle of shared humanity and collective responsibility. The initiative aims to counter xenophobia and Afrophobia while addressing the underlying conditions of socio-economic deprivation that impact both local South Africans and migrant communities. Rather than permitting foreign nationals to be blamed for widespread economic hardship, the movement emphasizes that issues such as housing shortages, unemployment, and underfunded public services stem from government delivery failures rather than the presence of immigrants.

Key objectives and demands of the movement include:

1. Police Oversight and Disbanding Vigilantes: Demanding that law enforcement actively investigate and prosecute vigilante squads and informal policing units that harass foreign nationals and inner-city residents.
   
   
2. Documentation and Administrative Reform: Calling for an immediate moratorium on forced expulsions to give undocumented workers time to regularize their status, alongside overhaul of the Department of Home Affairs documentation pipeline.
   
   
3. Housing and Social Justice: Urging the Department of Human Settlements to enact a moratorium on evictions, prioritizing the in-situ upgrading of informal settlements and occupied buildings over forced removals.
   
   
4. Social Cohesion and Rights Protection: Safeguarding universal access to essential healthcare, education, and social protection while opposing the scapegoating of vulnerable groups.
   
   

Through national days of action, peaceful street marches, and direct engagement with public authorities, Operation Ubuntu works to establish structured dialogue between decision-makers and community advocates to secure lasting protection and equality across South Africa.
